ok i have windows me, 1.4ghz athlon, asus a7m266 mb, 512 pc2100, ibm deskstar 60 gxp hdd, and geforce 3 card. whenever i play counter strike, i havent played any other games so i dont know if this is just with counterstrike or not, but after awhile my system lags and slows down. the mouse has slow reaction and moves very poorly. while this happened i checked system resources and i still had 62 percent left so whats causing the computer to slow down? oh and shutting down counter strike doesnt help i have to restart.

Here are some general ME speed-up tips:

First go to Start>Settings>ControlPanel>Automatic Updates and turn off automatic updates. choose I will update my computer manually.

Then right-click on the icons in the tray area, open each, go through the options to turn off the "tray" or "run at startup" feature.

For the others, go to Start>Run, type msconfig. Leave systray, scan registry, Load Power Profile (both),*StateMgr, your virus scanner and firewall if you have one.

Go to Start>Run, type notepad c:\windows\win.ini and check for programs loading here:
[windows]
load=
run=

Open Explorer and navigate to c:\windows\temp and delete all files here. Empty the Recycle Bin

Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools>InternetOptions, click the Delete Files and Clear History buttons.

Close all tray applications and hit Alt_Ctl_Del and end task on all items except for explorer and systray, disable your screensaver, then run scandisk, then defrag.

If you're ruinning Microsoft Office, remove the office entry from the startup folder and kill the Find Fast indexer.

If you don't know what an entry is or what it does, post back.

Hi, I'm having the same problem with my system slowing down and have done all the things that were listed in the tip. I have an Amd k6/2 450, 384 mb pc100 ram, 240 mb cash file and a 1 gig swap file. Norton system doctor says the only resorce that is tapped is my cash file. I run all my daigs and clean ups once a week. Is there more i can do? The system slows down after i transfer alot of data or have been on the pc for a while. Any help? thanks.

reghakr,

For Windows ME in MSCONFIG, you do not need Load Power Profile at all. You do need PCHealth though (that handles System Restore).

Hope this helps! NATE

Do you have the drivers for the AMD processor installed from the AMD website? I did this and it helped on my ME machine. Also might want to try an active memory recovery utility, I use MemTurbo 2.1 and am delighted with it. Very useful,,, lots of options. Good Luck :)

ok i have windows 98 if that is a big deal so ley me know please. thanks

how about heat? do you have a good fan? is you tower tucked in a cubby hole of a desk?

hi ifix1
i have a ggod fan and it works fine. when i reboot the system is fine(no shut down time). the system is in a house that has AC and at least a foot behind it. i'm a Jr. engineer and have been fixing electronic equipment for 24 years so i do check this stuff at least 3 times a year so you have a ggod one and thanks.

Let us see what you have running. Click start--run--type msinfo32--ok. Then doubleclick on software environment then doubleclick on startup programs. Then at the top click edit--select all--edit--copy--then come here and right click in your reply window and select paste.

If you have Norton system doctor loading at startup via msconfig then uncheck it. It's a big resource hog that doesn't need to be running in the background.

thanks,

auto and config are clean.
