My system idle process is running in the 90's. Any ideas on what is causing this?

It's normal and does not affect performance.

processor actually doing something = 100% maximum

System Idle Process = 100% - (processor actually doing something)%

You might consider donating those idle cycles to a distributed computing project. It give mine to (depending on machine) SETI, Folding, and Distributed Computing.

See this site for more information:

System Idle Process in the Task Manager process list reflects the idle unused cycles of the processor. The higher the better. The figure you should look at is CPU Usage in the box below the process list or under the Performance tab. If usage is high here you may have a problem. Usage will vary as you load and unload various programs.
