System Idle Process running 99% how do i stop it?

AMD Athlon 2800+ (Barton), 768mb DDR 3200, ATI Radeon 9500, WD 200gb & WD 120gb HD's, MSI DVD-/+RW, Aopen CDRW, Creative Live 5.1, Connexant PCI ADSL (disabled), Copperjet 800 USB ADSL Modem, Epson R200 Printer. Running Windows XP Pro (fully updated)

System can sitting doing nothing and if i run task manager i see a System Idle process running at 60-99%. This causes problems for burning CD's/DVD's (using nero 6) as it causes buffer underruns. Can't isolate what this process is, or how to stop it. Help appreciated.

The "System Idle process " means "I am not doing anything" !
That is not a process, so it certainly will not stop you from burning, so you problem lies elsewhere.

Don't look at CPU % check your memory usage and see what is using the most.

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

Go into System Configuration Utility and un-check anything you found to be running in your START-UP folder.

Turn off ALL screensavers, you don't need them..just turn off your monitor, and anything running in the background, with exception to virus software and firewall.

Clear your Document folder.

Re-start.

Also in Nero do not set recording speed to "maximum", I have found this to unreliable. Make sure that the speed that you try and record will does not exceed the max speed for your medium.

Personally I do not record at more than 12x speed. This burns a full cd in 3 minutes and also ensures that there are no buffer underruns.

You should also look to see if there is a firmware update for your burner.
