I have had many occasions when I am not able to do something with software on my PC because it says that only the system adminstrator is able to make changes. How does one make themselves the system admin?

More detail please. Are you sure you are using Win9x? Also what are you trying to access on your computer if you are on Win9x. Are you connected to a network? Is this possibly a personal computer with Windows 2000, XP, or NT?

Iam using win 98se. Set up with a home network. One of the most recient Items I have been denied access to is My Graphics Card up date [Nivinda}, This Is my own PC with Win98 and networked with my wifes Pc which is running Win ME

Which PC out of the two(win98 and winme) is acting as a server ?

This issue doesn't make sense to me. There is no way to lock a Win98 machine from uninstalling and installing drivers. Windows 98 NEVER asks for an administrative password. Try right clicking My Computer and select Properties, under the General Tab double check your Operating System.

When and where exactly are you getting the error and what exactly does it say?

This may sound odd, but I have had a similar problem in the past with W98SE, only this was to do with my homepage. I must have visited (or been consoled by) a dubious site, because my homepage had been reset to that bad site! I tried to change it by going to Tools/Internet options only to get the administrator message. The fix was in the registry - can't find it as yet, but if this jogs someones memory, then its helped. In the mean tiome, I will keep looking

Just a quick thought - are there any policies being implemented on your PC? This does smell of a policy kicking in. Run msconfig and look at the startup section to see if anything looks dodgy there. We implemented system policies at my place of work, and I have the feeling that it mentions system administrator in the message that denies access.
Let me know what you find.

Tony, you're referring to deleting the value NoBrowserOptions most likely found here:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions

I know what you mean. The question is, is nightowl17 getting the same restictions error and where is he/she getting it?

I am getting this on a software application for my Vanta 16MB Vido card which has an up date that I can not get into Because of not being The system Admin . I am running WIN98SEC . on a home network with ME. The win98 pc is set up as A server . I guess the problem would not Be related directly as a Windows Problem , But Again there is this system admim function That has me stumped .I guess this is just one of those problems you just have to dig for .Thanks all for your input

What are you clicking on that produces the error and what does it say exactly??? Is it in the control panel, display properties, where???

The program is in the control panel when I open it everything is grayed out and a message saying "only system admins can create, save,or deleate profiles'The program is a update for my NVIDIA graphics card

Just out of curiousity and not to be rude, but did you get the nvidia detonator files for 98 and not 2k or xp? If you did, try an older copy of the driver, I'm pretty sure you can still find something out there from the nvidia site.

Had the same problem in not being able to access passwords off the control panel. Did a "Poledit", opened registry, checked both local computer and user for restrictions, unclicked the password restriction and I was off and running. Don't know how helpful this will be to you but it might be worth a shot.
