I would like to produce a column chart in Excel with two series of data. The first one is a regular column (bar) but for the second I want a symbol to appear at the top of the bar. I plan to hide this second bar (by suitable color choice) so that only the symbol will appear. Can one place a symbol at the top of a bar? I would very much appreciate some help from a wise one out there.

With thanks

Select series 2, and do menu command Format/Selected data series, and on the Data Labels tab choose Show Label. This will put a text box at the top of each column.

The labels that are showing may not be the ones you want, but you can activate each label separately and type whatever you want into it. Clicking a label once will select all of the labels for a series, clicking it a second time will activate the label for a single column.

You can even put a simple link into each label by typing = and then clicking on the required source cell.

That should do what you want.

Glenn.

Thank you so much Glenn. Before reading your reply I worked out the first few steps but your suggestions regarding the label content put the cherry on the top. Much appreciated! This is exactly what I needed.

Thanks again.
