Hi

I am testing Symantec Ghost enterprise 7.0 and almost everything works fine. My problem is, that when I try to dump an image of a HD from one machine to another (cloning), it stops about halfway through the splash screen with a bsod saying "Inaccessible boot device". I have tried running sysprep on the source pc before pulling the image, but I still get the error, when I have loaded it to another system. Can this be because the two machines are too different in hardware setup (e.g. source being an IDE drive and destination SCSI). I works fine if I pull an image and then reinstall it to the same system again.

Please post any suggestions/solutions

yes, an IDE image will not work properly if dumped to a SCSI machine. They are not "clones" of each other.

You are better off using a Win2K install only in that case. The reason being - ghost does not activate plug and play functionality like sysprep does, and any changes in hardware between machines will not be detected properly.

Also - cloning a workstation image onto a server machine is not going to work either.

An image is an exact 1 and 0 (binary) duplicate of a hard drive. Any difference whatsoever in hardware can cause an image to fail. Use ghost only on exact duplicate machines, or image Win2K up to the point of where windows starts asking for hardware/setup settings (like an OEM installation), and continue setup from there so plug and play functionality will work for you.

Good luck
