Does anyone use the Sybase agent available in NetBackup? I was wondering if it would be better to use another solution to backup the sybase to a local disk and then use NetBackup to copy that to tape. The only thread I've seen in this forum concerning Sybase was this one posted last year.

Just because the VERITAS documentation states a certain thing does not make it a fact and that is truth.

Bob,
We are using Sybase DB Agents here and are reasonably happy. The one issue I have discovered is if the DBA starts multiple data streams (that's not the right DBA term, but...) and there are not enough tape drives available, the job will fail. We do some backups to a DSSU to get around this problem or we limit a script to using one tape drive. Using LTO-II technology we are seeing speeds approaching 35 MB/Sec to tape. We also chose to only put one script per Policy, increasing our policy count dramtically. The Test server running Sybase has 15 scripts in one Policy and runs fine. The choice between one script per Policy or having multiple scripts was made based upon a couple of factors. If one script fails in a Policy, the job does not execute the remaining scripts. If you have to re-start the job you have to either re-run db scripts which ran successfully, or edit the Policy. We choose to have one script /Polcy for the Production servers and multiple scripts (15) for the Test server. Curiously we have never had a failure requiring us to re-run the Test server Policy (I know I just jinxedmyself).

Hope this helps.

Please note we are using NBU Ent 5.1 MP4 on our Master/Media Server, NBU Ent 5.1 MP3a on our client. The Master is a Solaris v880 8 way running Soalris 8, the Client is an HP 7420 running HP UX 11.11 (current version of Sybase). The backups are occuring over the LAN with a Gb NIC on the Client and quad Gb NIC(s) on the Master/Media.

I hope this helps,
