Switching between Shared Networking and Direct Dial

I'm running VPC 6.0.1 with Win XP Home on Mac OSX 10.2.6.

I connect from VPC to the Internet with Shared Networking on a 56K dialup line.

However, I have two PC programs that use their own web updaters. They don't like Shared Networking, so I'd like to use Direct Dial Internet Connection occasionally to check for updates on those programs.

Can I simply do the following?

1. Set up my modem and internet connections as described in Connectix KDB #4861
2. Use VP's Settings Panel to enable or disable the network connection.
3. Use XP's Control Panel to enable the connection I choose to use.

I'd appreciate advice from anyone who's tried this.

Thanks.

I can dial out of VPC in os 9.2, I've not been able to get my internal modem to respond to VPC in OS 10.2.6. (TiBook 550mhz) So I usually launch classic, load VPC, then do dial-up. (I know, I know... why not just reboot in OS 9?) Here's the crazy part, I then use ATT dialer to dial into a Citrix server to run WindowsNT.

So it goes: WindowsNT over dial-up on top of Virtual PC (Windows2000) on top of OS 9.2 on top of OSX. It's slow, but it works.

I would love to upgrade my VPC, I have 5.0 and need at least 5.0.3. 6.1 would be OK too I guess, but every since Microsoft has taken over Connectix, I'm thinking of going another route.
