Switch goes down, well, sorta...

Here's one for you guys...

I have two switches (2950's to be exact). From time to time the switches will timeout.

Why?

Let me give you the whole scenerio, I use what's up and from time to time I will get paged, the service tells me the switch goes down, however the switch is not down. Internet service is fine, but you are unable to manage the box. I litterally have to go to the the swtich and I have unplug it and plug it back in.... the swqitch will be fine for about 3-4 days and the whole shpeal happens all over again. Have enyone ever seen somethingl ike this before?

Do you see any errors in the switch's console or log? I am guessing that the switch shuts down your port that you have your monitoring server/pc plugged into for some reason.

Do you have your management interface in a seperate vlan from your access ports?

Broadcast storms and ghost imaging have been known to cause this issue.


What version of IOS are you running on this switch?


There are a bunch of vulnerabilities in some of the code releases particularly SNMP related ones that cause the device to become unresponsive. In your case it seems to be only affecting the supervisor management only not the forwarding logic of the switch. I wonder if it is still learning new mac addresses. If not that would point to the supervisor failing.



have you tried consoling into the switch when this happens to see if you can manage it locally?
