Hello all,

I am currently studying for my ccna, and have acquired a 2950 switch upon which to practice. I also have a cisco router that I can access and configure just fine, but am having problems accessing the switch via the console.

It appears to boot fine and the output prior to being asked if i would like to enter initial configuration dialog is fine, but when prompted for this I cannot type "yes" as I would like (or anything), and the following is always output aftetr this:

--- System Configuration Dialog ---

Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]:
00:00:14: %SPANTREE-5-EXTENDED_SYSID: Extended SysId enabled for type vlan
00:00:17: %SYS-5-RESTART: System restarted --

At this point I can do nothing but turn the switch off...

Can anybody point me in the right direction? Getting a little frustrated :(

Thanks in advance.

Wzell, telnet may still work...
this.."00:00:14: %SPANTREE-5-EXTENDED_SYSID: Extended SysId enabled for type vlan"
tells me a config, perhaps with a vlan1 IP address, may still be present. He can find out by connecting to one of his routers and doing sh cdp nei det to get the IP address...that would be pretty harsh if it DID have an IP address, but vlan 1 was "shutdown"...

Tried connecting it to a router and it doesnt find it.

If it helps, at all times when the mode is set to util, port 1 on the switch is constant green and ports 2 and 3 are amber. The rest are off at all times. I don't know whether that is significant or not.

That means that the switch is using less than .00476837158203125% of the total bandwidth...for each LED from right to left that is off, it is using 1/2 of the total bandwidth available. One off=50%, 2 off=25%, 3=12.5%, etc...21 off=.00476837158203125%.

Ok, I see.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions guys, I think I'm just going to take it back to where I got it tomorrow and see what they say. Hopefully they will just exchange it for another and not try to attach any blame to me!

Very annoying though as I had the whole weekend free and was hoping to get some much needed practice in :(
