HI I HAVE WI XP SP2 AND EVERY TIME I SHUT OFF MY COMPUTER AT THE SHUT DOWN SCREEN IT SAYS SVCHOST.EXE APPLICATION ERROR MEMORY COULD NOT READ CAN SOMONE PLEASE HELP ME THANX

Some general things to try if it is not malware.

Have a look in your Event Viewer and see if there are any other errors mentioned.

See if System Restore will get you back to a restore point before your problem with Explorer.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Explanation

User Action
Do one or all of the following:

Review the error information displayed in the message.
Verify that the service password has not expired.
Verify that the service is in the correct location.
Verify that the service is not infected with a virus.
To display the WIN32_EXIT_CODE error that SCM encountered when trying to start the program, at the command prompt, type
sc query service name
The information displayed can help you troubleshoot possible causes for the error.
If the WIN32_EXIT_CODE is zero, then SCM did not attempt to start the service because the error was detected first.

HI I LOOKED IN MY EVENT VEIWER AND IT SAID THIS HAD AN ERROR COULD THIS BE MY PROBLEM?


 
Your error in the Event Viewer seems to be related to Trend Micro Virus Scanner.

Is this your normal virus scanner or are you doing the online scans mentioned in FAQ608-4650

 
i dont use that scanner i use norton 2004 and used the online scan by mcafee ive searched for spyware i dont know whatit is i restarted my computer today and the svchost error went away then i used it and it then restarted it too see if the error would show up and it was still good then i restarted it too more times and it was back .... thanx for any help you can help me with
