Sun authentication issues

All,

I just inhereited a Sun Ultra to assume our Tru64's role as sendmail server. I got it reconfigured to assume the role/id of the other box and it seems to think it's the new box (new network, et al). However there's and issue with clients connecting via a term server/outlook. It appears the outlook client sees the server but keeps prompting for a password/account, in spite of the fact I've built them an account on the Sun to match their NT.
The interesting part comes from something I remember the other admin saying, as he ran for the door, that this Sun was configured for Kerberos authentication. I went into /etc/services and commented out anything related to Kerb. Is this the way to remove the Kerb. requirement?

Thanks.

Is Outlook trying to retrieve mail from the server? If so, I assume it's using POP3 (Post Office Protocol 3), and I don't believe there is a POP3 server installed by default. You may need to find one and install it.

Annihilannic,

Thanks for the response, I should have added that I've reconfigured sendmail to also assume the id of the original mail server. Since I posted this I've spoken with the person that originally configured the Sun and found that he never ran Kerberos, so now I'm looking at some sort of Outlook/Sendmail issue. When I run top I notice Popper run, but never see sendmail running in top processes.

ps -e | grep sendmail will tell you whether sendmail is running at all as a daemon.

sendmail should only be required for outgoing mail, and doesn't (usually) require a password for mail user agents (such as Outlook) to connect.

I would say the authentication issue more likely lies with popper and its configuration; unfortunately I know nothing about popper so can't help you further.

Thanks again Anni. As I find out more about this server, I tend to believe you on authentication in popper issues. It's a strange set-up if accepted here, but when you work for the feds as a subcontractor you tend to get in the habit of not asking too many questions.

A,

Yeah I saw krb.conf and krb.realms yesterday. All they have in them is the other admins domain name. I tried a couple of things, like commenting the domains out and completely renaming the files. Neither seems to have worked, I'm now trying to find an entry in a file that references krb.conf, maybe I can turn it off there.
The latest info from the manager is that the other admin is now going to deliver his kerb server.
Thanks for all the help.

Hmm... looks like your last posting went in twice, overwriting mine? Odd.
