My PC (Celeron 466, WinXP Pro ) has been working well for the past 2 months since I switched to WinXP from Win98 SE ( i.e. reformating HD and start installing WinXP Pro from scratch) . Suddenly ,this evening when I swiched the PC on, it restarted while WinXP was still loading (i.e. before the welcoming screen ) !! And the restart kept on occuring at exactly the same point during the WinXP loading process . Please advise how to fix this problem.
Thanks,

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?) and load the "Last known good configuration" option.

An easy to follow recovery console description when unable to start computer due to corrupt registry.

Click on Tutorial then the Charlie White article on XP crash.
This is a laymans version of Q307545 in simple language.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

How to Perform an In-Place Upgrade (Reinstallation) of Windows XP (Q315341)

Thanks Linney for the kind and effective infos ! The recovery console method did not work so I had to reinstall WinXP and got my PC running again... I now had to reinstall all my programs.. Well, you can't win them all, can you ?
Again, thank you , linney...

maybe its just me but i wouldnt run windowsxp on a celery 460 unless A. I had 512mbs of ram or B. i wanted to hate my computer for the rest of its life. I had enough problems with my p3 500mhz and xp that i cant imagine a celery 460 and xp. Id rather go with win2k.
But thats my opinion and usually my problems are isolated to me anyways. [soapbox]

Thanks, deecee, for the warning but that's a possibility to watch out for. WinXP seemed to work OK in the past 2 months on my system since the switch from Win98 SE.

You may want to check the memory, it may have came unseated or not present. This has been known to fix restarting problems in xp.

I had the same problem with my PC at home. Even after a complete reinstall of my system the problem re-ocurred.

If you can reboot the computer in safe mode, check this out:
Under system (right-click my computer-properties) you have a tab startup/shutdown.
Uncheck the item restart computer (below recovery options.
This will prevent you from seeing the blue screen with the error message on it. Always helpfull. It is impossible to make anything foolproof because fools are so ingenious.

I had the same problem a week ago. What I did to fix it was to use Windows Restore to go back a certain date when WinXP was shut down fine; that means it could be well beyond 'Last known good configuration' in Safe Mode. My experience in this did not tell me why that problem happened, but since it works out ok it saves me from reload WinXP and all other applications.
