For some reason, one of our PC systems has suddenly become unable to recieve pop3 e-mail in Outlook via port 110. If I change this to SSL, port 995, it works just fine.

This system was using 110 until a day or 2 ago. There have been no system changes or software installations that I am aware of. Other identically configured systems on the same network still work fine on port 110.

I've tried re-creating the users mailbox and have been successful in connecting via port 110 from another system so it is not the mail server.

Any suggestions?

It might help to know the error when receiving fails.

Additional information:

Have tried disabling Norton AntiVirus e-mail scanning as well as scanning system for viruses, adware, and spyware using various tools.

Error is as follows:

Log onto incoming mail server (POP3): Unable to connect to the incoming mail server (POP3). Please verify the port and SSL settings for the incoming server. To access these settings close this dialog, then click More Settings and click on the Advanced tab.

Outlook's error messages aren't very helpful. As you obviously know, the most common cause of this is e-mail virus scanning. Another possible, but less likely cause is some software firewalls.

Can the problem machine still send mail? You could try increasing the timeout setting to see if it has any effect.

The problem machine can send mail perfectly. There are no software firewalls at the system level. Additionally, we have already tried increasing the time out and this did not help. Now you can see why I am so frustrated...

What version of Outlook are you using? I was just setting up Outlook 2002 on a new machine and noticed a setting for error logging that didn't exist in ealier versions. I haven't tried it but it may be worth a look.

Also, have you tried using a different mail client, like OE? That might help to narrow down if it's system related or Outlook related.
