I keep my billable hours for the week in excel and would like to group the hours by week and insert into a chart. Is this possible? How can excel group the data so that the chart totals the hours completed for the week and then charts it by week??

If you are using a list, create a Pivot table, and group the results per week

Thanks for the response.

Is that a manual group?? I am trying to avoid that. I want the grouping to happen automatically so I can just enter the data. I don't know a lot about pivot tables.

OK...figured out how to create by pivot table....cool- thanks.

Next question is....can u add a trendline to the pivot table? If not, then can you do the same group thing with a standard chart where you can add a trendline???

Pivot tables are automatic, and your results will be updated automatically in a nice looking table and very easily
Suppose you have two columns
Col A with dates of the expenses
Col B with the expenses
Each of the columns should have a heading
Click anywhere in this list and go to the menu Data>Pivot table Report
The wizard will open. Click Next ( default option is OK ) and again "Next" if you are satisfied with the range to analyze
Now, depending if you are using 2000 or 97 there is a slight difference.
Just let me know if you're in trouble.

Do you really need a trendline? The pivot will sum every thing for you.
You can click anywhere on the pivot table , click F11 and the default graph will come up.
Changing the type from columns to lines should do the trick

Legend!!!

That works just fine....changed to a line type and added a trendline.

Thanks for all the help!!!:-)
