Subreport variable - before subreport?

I need to print a variable generated in a subreport, before the subreport is printed. Both the variable and subreport are placed in report footer.

I don't want to step through a large table in subreport twice... Is there any trick?

No trick; you'll have to go through the 2 rounds, unless you can include the value in the main report's SQL.
