Dear Greater I.T. Intellect,

I have a win2kprosp2 client w/ the following specs:

OS – MS Windows 2000 Pro. SP2
Version – 5.0.2195 Service Pack 2 Build 2195
System Type – X86-based PC
Processor – X86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 3 GenuineIntel ~667…
Bios Version – 06/09/00
Time Zone – Pacific Standard Time
Total Physical Memory – 523,568 KB
Available Physical Memory – 392,576 KB
Total Virtual Memory – 1,613,028 KB
Available Virtual Memory – 1,385,640 KB
Page File Space – 1,089,460 KB

The client is running on a native Windows 2000 Domain. The server has sp2. Client is dual boot between win98se and win2kprosp2. Win98SE volume specs. Include FAT32, 14.2GB capacity w/ 5.57GB free. Win2kprosp2 volume specs. Include NTFS5, 7.36GB capacity w/ 1.31GB free.

The user had Office 2000 Professional installed on the NTFS volume. We upgraded Office 2000 Pro to Office XP Pro. After the upgrade the following anomaly arose:

Launch Word XP/Excel XP. Hit the file menu. Select the open function. The window appears prompting the user to find the file that he or she wishes to open. This all works fine. When the user hits the ‘look in’ drop down button, the client takes about 25sec. To .5min to list the folders/files on the system. This also happens w/ the save as function.

Any help on this one, would be greatly appreciated.

Please help?

You will have to excuse me but this is a very weird situation for a couple of reasons.

First, I just had a problem very similar to this. I am upgrading the computers to 2k/Office XP. I went into Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder Options>File Types>(xls and/or doc)>advanced button>highlight the open action and turn off DDE. I hope this helps, I know not so weird but...

I have no idea if your handle and your name correspond, but your handle corresponds to my real name. It was kind of surreal browsing over the posts to see my name posting things. Anyway....Good luck!

YoMang,

Thank you for your reply. I will give this a try. Please forgive my ignorance, but what is DDE? My window shows the following options:

Change Icon button for Microsoft Word Document
Under Actions listing I see: new, open, print, printto. Open is in bold.
Buttons to the left show: New, Edit, remove, Set as Default
Available check boxes are: confirm open after download, always show extension, browse in same window.

In regards to my handle, yeah that's my first initial, last name. So your last name is Godinez too? Hmm...your family wouldn't happen to orginate from Corpus Chisti Texas or even deeper still, Chiwawa Mexico? At any rate, yeah small listserv world indeed YoMang. Take care, and thanks again for the input.

YoMang,

Never mind, found the DDE switch. Didn't look hard enough. Will give this a try...thanks again for the input.

Sorry for the screw up....highlight OPEN and then press EDIT. A whole new dialog box should come up. Just in case write down what is in each of the windows, but you should be OK in any case. Uncheck "use DDE" and that may help with the document times/access.

DDE is a legacy database linking device back from the Paradox days. I am just finding out myself, I was just as ignorant a couple of days ago.

If you would could you contact me at mikedinez@yahoo.com? Any history on the Godinez name is of great interest to me.

Thanks,
Yomang
