subform update and/or query with code?

I have a form where the user selects criteria, and i wish for a subform (looks like subdatasheet) below that i wish to display records based on that criteria when the user presses the "list" button. I know the sql, and have it all setup, but how do i actually get the subform to update its recordset to my sql (day my sql is in a string "str1")? any suggestions?
