Sub-totals of ranked column do not work

I have a column with amount paid ranked and the sub-total box checked. When I bring in a measure variable to another column in my crosstab, I lose the sub-totals calculation (only the grand total of all shows in Sum & Sum All rows, while the Sum Other row=0). The key thing about this extra variable column seems to be that it is a calculation based on a link between 2 universes. That variable calc. does work in the new column, BUT the ranking sub-totals in the amount column are lost after that. As a matter of fact, any variable referring to a universe that the amount column is not based on will mess up the sub-totals when it's added to the crosstab.

Is there a function I need to add to my total formulas? If not, any suggestions?
