Can I set up one XP pro PC with a shared folder with multiple subfolders without setting permissions on all subfolders? I do not care if this is a hidden share, but I want to limit access and limit the pcs that access the folder to only that folder and subfolders.

I cannot map any drives on the remote pcs, they will only accept an IP address, user name, and password for a remote share. (complicated but true)

Yes, any properly shared folder will automatically share the subfolders below.

For Simple file sharing see:
For full NTFS file sharing see:

And for the record, IP addresses are a legitimate way to map drives - there is nothing wrong with it. (I assume IP addresses are required because there's no local DNS resolution).

Is your file system NTFS?

Turn off Simple File Sharing and yes, you can enable a share and lock it down as needed using NTFS security. Subfolders of a share are automatically available to users of that share. If you need to restrict further you can either create shares on the sub folders or you can simply lock down those folders using NTFS.

Shares may be accessed via UNC or IP

Example:

\\192.168.1.2\share
\\mypcname\share

I hope you find this post helpful.

When I create a share \\192.168.1.2\subfolder of ABC and share the subfolder it works if I point to using the same syntax.

When I share \\192.168.1.2\ABC and attempt to have the remote access \\192.168.1.2\subfolder of ABC it does not work.

Should my syntax be \\192.168.1.2\ABC\subfolder ???

Thanks for the help and suggestions.

The mapped drive letter should point to whatever folder you want it to - this could be the primary share or any folder below. Consider the following directory structure (green text is the folder that is shared):

Local C drive
|
|-FolderA
|
|-FolderB
| |
| |-SubfolderK
| |
| |-SubfolderJ
|
|-FolderC

On the remote machine, if you map //server/FolderB, your remote machine will see the contents FolderB including the 2 subfolders.

If you remotely map //server/FolderB/SubfolderK, your remote machine will only see the contents of SubfolderK

Slashes should be the other direction in my notes above [blush]

I apologize. I provided some wrong information.

The problem is that the remote (embedded NT4) units will not accept a path in the format IP address\shared folder\subfolder.
The remote machine say the the UNC path is incorrect. There is no access to the OS these machines can only be accessed through the application on them.

I am a phone guy lurking out here in the XP area and I seriously appreciate everyone's help.
Thank you.

Your posted path IP address\shared folder\subfolder is not a unc. It would need to be [red]\\[/red]IP address\shared folder\subfolder

I hope you find this post helpful.

Here are the error messages I am getting.

The UNC path "||ipaddress|shared folder|subfolder|is not on a valid format.

Also says Remote Drive

"|<computer_name>\<shared_folder>>"

or

||<cip_address>|shared_folder>>"

I get the same message when using backslashes

Thanks again.

You sure the folder is shared? When on the system do you see a hand under the folder icon? What permissions are set for the share? What permissions are set in the NTFS settings?

Have you configured TCP/IP on the target machine to use DNS? Since this is NT4, do you have WINS setup?

I hope you find this post helpful.

In reverse order there is no OS access on the remote machines, only application access. I could hack it,but I would void the warranty.
The share is on my PC and I have created a user with full rights to that share.
The folder is shared, hand shows, but I can't find any way to enter folder\subfolder on the remote pc. If I directly share the subfolder \\ipaddress\shared folder, it works.

Can I guess that the developers of my application are (fill in the blank) idiots?

and I have created a user with full rights to that share
This has no value if the this user does not exist on the remote machines
but I can't find any way to enter folder\subfolder on the remote pc.
I would hope that you can't without OS access.

I think that I'm still at a loss as to how this works (or is expected to work).

The application has the ability to backup files to a remote share. I works if the remote is input as \\ipaddress\shared folder

I was hoping my syntax was hosed so that I could enter \\ipaddress\folder\subfolder.

I tried the advice here (gratefully) but I am guessing that the limitation is in the remote units application programming.

Thanks for all of the advice.

How about trying the adminstrative share to the drive?

\\192.1068.1.3\c$\backups\destinationdirectory

I hope you find this post helpful.
