I'm annoyed about something! Why cant I get the 1280 x 960 resolution which makes circles look circular, instead I get the ridiculouus 1280 x 768, oval shaped circles or the 1280 x 1024, oval on its side shaped circles. I have a radeon 8500 and it doesnt allow me the proper 4 x 3 resolution. Which graphics card should I get that does, I'm not into gaming so maybe a Matrox?? Or is there a way to force my card to give me the resolution I want. Plus my new mitsubishi diamondtron has an 'S' shaped wiggle right across the top 1cm of the screen, cant seem to get rid of this either. AAAARGH!

yes, definitely, my friend has the same monitor.

What program are you using to view/create these circles. I'm currently looking at radeon 8500 running at 1280X1024 at 75 Hz on a gateway VX900 monitor. Circles are round in my cad program and in MS Paint.

all programs, its just that 1280 x 1024 isn't an exact scale amount of 800 x 600. 1280 x 960 is. If I want to have perfect looking circles I have to bring the sides of my monitor viewing area in by about an inch at each side.

It's probably has to do with your monitor, not the card. Think about this for a moment - what makes you think that 800 x 600 is the correct standard upon which all other resolutions should be proportional? Remember that 640 X 480 was the origal graphics monitor standard. Now, how does that relate to 1280 X 1024? What about 800 x 600?

In any event, I have seen something similar to what you describe, execpt it was the exact opposite. Certain resolutions would cause the displayed image to be short about 1 inch from the left and right sides of the monitor. To fill the monitor, required the horizontal size adjustment to be set as large as possible. This made certain displays (like circles) to appear stretched. In that case the 'problem' was the monitor, not the card.

I agree with smah.
If you really have to have the circle perfect you have to adjust the monitor to suit the pattern. Don't foget to try different sizes of circles also, you will probably find that they vary.

640 x 480 is an exact scale percentage reduction of 800 x 600, as is 1280 x 960. I dont know if you're getting what I mean, maybe I'm not describing the problem properly. If my monitor window is filled almost to the edge, top, bottom and sides, when I use 1280 x 960, circles look round. If however my monitor window is filled almost to the edge, top, bottom and sides and I use 1280 x 1024 or 1280 x 768 the circles look either squashed vertically or horizontally.

As they should. If 1280 x 960 is round why would 1280 x 1024 be? it's 64 pixels wider for the same heigth.

and thats why its a stupid ratio! Whats the point. Its a different shape from the monitor.
