Okay, I've pulled on the front of this stupid thing and I cannot open it!! Is there a secret to opening an old Packard Bell 1750CDT (it's a 486 for goodness sake!!)?

It seems like I knew this a long time ago, I really thought that it opened from the front. Any clues?

Thanks!!

Mindy

LOL!! I don't remember right off the top of my head, but if this is the one that I am thinking of, we used to hand these to the "new guy" in the PC shop and make them try to open it. Then we would sit back and enjoy the fun! Okay, so maybe it was a bit mean, but you know how those things go!

Anyway, if this is the same one, it is a rather boxy looking case, with two grey (removable) plastic pieces that run horizontally on the left and right side of the case....

If so, Flip it up-side-down. Now take out the screws on the bottom. One side of the case is attatched to the bottom, and that whole piece will slide right off if you pull up on it.

Hope this helps.....

lol Yes, that is mean! And too bad I'm the only one here and can't pass it off to someone else!!

I know which one you're talking about, but of course, this isn't it. I turned it upside down anyway, and I think the screws that are there are for the mobo. But it has that gray part along the bottom, they just don't stick out, and I can see where it SHOULD come off, but it's not budging.

Okay, not finding that model listed anywhere (was googling for a quick pic or something). I just can't picture it.

Is this a tower unit, or a desktop?

I couldn't find it either. It's a tower unit. I'm about ready to tell her that it is just too durn old to go on the internet and that's why it won't connect!!!

sometimes they accept these little lies (although this is probably true!)

there are 4 screws in the back that look like they are holding the power supply/fan in. no other screws. I started to take those out and then thought what if the power supply falls in and I can't get the cover off!?

Oh well. Don't worry about it any more. I am going to tell her that I can't get it online because it is only a 486. It has win98 and only 20 megs of ram so it would be slow as heck anyway (and if it'sthe modem that it says on the outside description it's on 14.4!)

I'm done with it. I've played with it for 3 hours. That's long enuf!!!!!!

thanks, mudskipper! (as always!)

Sorry that you didn't get it....

I still maintain that I think it pulls off from the bottom--and if the screws that you pulled out of the bottom were slightly thicker than normal case screws, then I'm 99 percent sure.

Anyway, guess I'm just fixated on it now--Heh--you think they have a support group for that?

;-)

Go figure. This is the style case that I was thinking of!

I agree with Mudskipper for the case style he gave the link for. I had one of those and I would expect others to be similar. It's possible that the screws are hidden under the feet for slightly different models.

lol That's much newer than this one!!

I uninstalled com1 and reinstalled it, still not getting online. I honestly think it is just too old to get online with our network. I realized that my boss askes for at least a 166, so that's what I'm going to tell her.

I'm going to unplug it and try the screws underneath again.

I pulled the screws out an nothing budges. The little black feet are literally glued on. I did get the gray peice off in front which revealed screws holding the front together. (doh!) Took that off, still not going anywhere. I just wanted to see what kind of modem it was so that I could find some drivers. It's not even recognizing that it has a modem and plus when I had to reinstall com1 it didn't recognize that. I'm going to tell her that the socket is blown. That she can buy a new one at walmart for $400!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for making my day!!!

by the way your describing it i think the guys are right..
when you remove those screws..(bottom of case facing you, left side of the case on top now)it should pull straight toward you about 1 inch then lift straight up.. it will not just lift without sliding down about an ince

msmindy1 -- if the one on ebay is too new, then I give--you are right, and I was steering you in the wrong direction.

What about hooking the customer up with a really nice external modem. You can probably find 28.8s and 33.6s for very cheap or even free.....

I see what you're saying, buckeye, but it's not moving at all. I must not be strong enuf!

I'm bringing my camera tomorrow and if it's still here I will show y'all.

I'm from Ohio originally, where are you located?

Mudskipper,

Great idea on the external modem. I will start searching for that now. Thanks!

southeast corner along the river..
and depending on how long it has been since the case has been apart they can get stuck real good

OMG!!! I finally got it!! There are 6 screws on the bottom.

Looks like this:

You take out screws 3, 4, 5, and 6 and then the whole right side and the bottom comes off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I get to find the drivers for it! ugh!!

thanks for your help. I just thought you would want to know this wonderful tidbit of info for future use!!

mindy (hope my picture comes out right)

Thanks for the update! Towards the end, there, I thought that you must have been right in thinking that it was a different case!!

Now you know why we gave it to the new techs for initiation!! LOL
