i was asked to feed a word document from foxpro

copy to file.xls type xls
!\path\winword file.doc
tools
mailmerge
merge

no problem there. it worked great on a couple of hundred records but im concerned about the upper limit of word and the time it took to process such a small file. the admin department was very happy with the results and i expect to have to deal with a lot more word documents and larger files and would like to continue to be a big hero your input is desired, needed and appreciated.

Do not know what copy of MSWord you are using, but my copy will do a mailmerge from a "dbase style DBF" file.

option 1
so I run a query to free table.
use the free table
copy to xxx.dbf type fox2x
then I start MSWord
*
option 2
most of the form letters designed my admin troops are not that complex can be simulated in memofields of a report database. So I have a table they can play with to add form letters The databse has a unique code field then the standard to, from, subject and 4 memofields and a signiture block general field. I have a generitic report form set to read from a free table and this formletter table.
so the code is
Run query to a free table with the standard name for the report form.
close data
use formletter.dbf order code
seek uniquecode
select 0
use the query free table of a standard name
report form genericformletter to printer.

it must be time for an upgrade(office 97), no dbase option in mailmerge that i could find. im useing fox26 for dos

the original document "came down from the mountain" on a floppy. memo field not be my best route. guess i need to start playing with word/fox combos till i get a working model i can apply to general users(no higher eduction not much experiance) thanks for the tip if we start generating our own documents i may try it.

I remember a program called fox2word or frx2word on one of the other forums I visit. Last time I say it it was on the Universal thread forum site. It converted information from a foxpro reporm form into a M$Word Document. Maybe that will help??? David W. Grewe

that would be a handy utility to have.
but again the original word document must be used.
The project has grown to include two letters by data type and fancy envelopes.

I gave in and instead of calling word, i call explorer to a directory that they can put the docs in and showed the manager how to insert fields. maybe that will work good enough and i wont get overrun by help desk stuff.
