Hello,

I have been to see a Phaser 8200 that is giving off a very strong smell. It is causing the users to have headaches, one of the other users eyes started watering when he entered the room. It's also been causing people to choke when in the room.

I have smelt the wax melting before and this is more of a burning smell.
Does anybody know what would cause this to happen?

Any help would be much appreciated.
Chris

There are normal smells associated with the ink melting and sometimes the oild on the drum will give off a strong smell but not to the extent you mention. Once I did find a piece of paper that was stuck in front of the drum heater in such a way as it did not register a jam and it did start to burn the paper and smake as it did. Only other thing I would think of is a component burning out on one of the boards which will give off a nasty smell. Driver chip on I/O left has been known to do that when one off the clutches short. Sorry I can't be of more help.

I'd have to wonder about there being something in there as Marty has suggested.

If a component were burning out, it would have failed and presumably brought the printer down. It wouldn't be in a failing but working (and smelling) state for very long.

Failed IC's can give off a sharp odor, but once it fails the equipment should either be non-functional or at least have some functional issues. A blown capacitor gives off an odor that is similar to fish.

Did something die in there by chance? I'm serious! It's a warm place, a critter could crawl inside for the warmth. When I worked in a TV shop years ago, we found dead things occasionally. The highlight was a saltwater eel.

If you haven't already, I'd pull the covers off and start looking/smelling around.

Hi,

Thanks for the help.

We have taken the drum heater out and found that on the left side at the end where the brown material is, has burned slightly.

After investigating further we have found that one of the drum heaters we kept from a scrap unit was also starting to go in the same place.
