StrictHostKeyChecking vs. RSA Key Removal in known_hosts

I need to purge a particular RSA key in the known_hosts files on the servers. The problem is, when I try to remote-in via the SSH connect option via my ION SA-5600 modem and open a SSH or SAT connection to the active server in the cluster I get a "remote host ID changed!" warning, complaining that the RSA remote host key has been changed, then it dumps me. It reports that somebody might be doing something nasty. Docs I'm reading tell me that I can either delete the offending key in the known_hosts file, or I can disable "StrictHostKeyChecking", but that might be contrary to the STIG procedures that were just applied by Avaya. Any comments or thoughts on how to accomplish my task so that I can connect to this server?
