Strange.... 4

All,
I have started to notice a bizzare feature nowadays when I try to download 'any' file on my windows 98(did not happen before).
When I click on the link that should start to download 'a' file, I get presented with the customary windows 'File download' message box:-

"would you like to open the file or save it to your computer"

'open' 'save' 'Cancel' 'more info'

[so far so good], now starts the strangeness..

NO MATTER, how many times I click on either 'open' or 'save'
nothing happens...the message box stares at me and I stare at the message box.
My only option is 'cancel' [this works and I come back to the original page link where I started from..:-( ]

and the other option is 'more info' [this then opens up the Microsoft Internet explorer help window with 'contents''index' etc etc. which I don't want in the 1st place' ]

so to summarise , I can't 'save' any downloadable files on my hard disk and the 'open' button doesn't do anything either.

I thought, maybe it had to do something with my Internet settings,so I went and I changed those settings to "default"[from the 'advanced' Tab...but no joy.

can someone help to crack this..?

Also, you don't happen to have a program called Go!Zilla installed on your pc, do you? If you do, remove it and see if the problem relents...

Ok...think I might have it (after all this....)

Know how to edit your registry?
Be sure you backup before you do, for good measure.

Go to Start > type in Regedit > Run > surf down to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins\Extension

Delete it.

Restart.

See if problem persists...

YOU CRACKED IT !!!!!!!!

Actually the problem disappeared immediately after installing IE 6.
The first time I went inside after installing IE 6, I homed on to that 'codec' web page and this time I just got a warning first, saying:

"This type of file could harm your computer if it contains malicious code"

and those famous 4 buttons below this message and THIS time those buttons worked !!

In fact I'm pretty sure that your last 3 mails would have also resolved the initial IE 5.5 problem, but it's too late to figure that one out now, since IE 6 is up and running.
[ and the cause would most probably lie(I even think 100%) in your last 3 mail suggestions]...it had to be the registry afterall....and BTW I do not have Gozilla.

This one turned out to be an epic...and all I can do now is, say an equally EPIC THANKS to your knowledge and patience !!!
