Strange Things After Win XP Upgrade

I recently updated a PC from Win 2K to XP Pro and I've noticed in the last few days when attempting to open the registry using regedit.exe or regedt32.exe, it opens for 1 or 2 seconds then it closes automaticlly. Taskmanager does the same thing. Anybody else seen this problem?

I am 89% certain this has nothing to do with your upgrade, per se. It has 100% due to the lack of an effective firewall and an an effective antivirus program at the moment.

Follow closely all the steps in faq608-4650
Particularly the need for on-line antivirus scans from smah's FAQ faq760-3862
I would use Trend Micro and Panda. Both.

So you think its a spyware hijacking?
I hadn't thought of that. I did remove GAIN and Presicion Time software just last night but not because I thought the symptoms were related. You think those symtoms are to keep me from finding the offending process?
That makes since now! I'll see if I can get another chance at that machine to find that sucker.

You are right, no firewall! I'm trying to talk them into a firewall/VPN solution still.
