A new Win XP SP2 install (on a new computer). I just made a search for a specific file on my WinXP CD. In my search params I told it to only search on the CD. It came back and found the file... but the odd thing is that it tells me that it found the file in the following folder "C:\Documents & Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning\I386"!! There is no sub-directory in the .....\CD Burning directory!

Any ideas on what is causing this?

Was this a "one off" glitch or is it repeatable?

Had you prior to this burnt the I386 folder to CD and then searched the created CD?

C:\Documents & Settings\Username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning

Is the temporary folder that windows uses for the inbuilt cd burning features.

On occasion I have found that when searching for files on a CD it will display this path and not the CD path. I have never found a "proper" solution to this, however disabling the inbuilt CD Recording feature for that CD drive stops it being displayed in the search results.

A very common problem with third-party CD burning utilities. Particularly if they use packet writing.
Nero InCD is known for this, but many others as well.

But there is another issue.

The fact of the matter is that XP hides, even with show all hidden enabled, certain folder types and filenames because it does not want you to mess with them directly. This includes many of its cached entries.

Boot with a Knoppix or other NTFS boot disk and you can then see nearly everything.
