When I use explorer to open a folder it takes ages to show the contents. If, however I click on a menu (tools for example) it all kicks into life and displays the folder and file list immeadiately. A similar problem exists whilst browsing internet sites, the page won't appear until I click a menu - but this is preventing me from doing a windowsupdate.

If I turn off the explorer option "View as web page" then local browsing is fine, contents of folders show instantly.

I have tried re-installing IE6(SP1) as well as re-applying Win 2k SP3. Neither worked.

Any ideas?

Is this happening just with IE or with Windows Explorer aswell ?

This is something you could try

Have a look at the services that are running. Have you installed anything recently that runs as a service ? virus checkers etc

What I would suggest is to go into services and terminate eveything that is non std ( things you have installed ), then try to access IE. If you stop the services one at a time then test IE you should be able to determine what is causing the problem.

If this is ot the problem I am stuck =)

SuperJon, thanks but no cigar. Stopped everything and problem still occurs?!

Anyone else any ideas?

you could try this

goto sysinternals.com and download filemon

run filemon to capture everything that is running and then recreate the problem with IE etc and check the filemon log to see if any there are any files being used or failing to be used (ie not located and timing out etc etc)

other good loggers from this website include process explorer and dll explorer? (name may not be exact?)

another option is to use a packet sniffer and check to see what your packets are doing in and out of the NIC
