Hi,

When I print my document (a lengthy wine portfolio) blank pages are printing that do not exist in the document. Does anyone know a way to troubleshoot this?

Thanks!

Most likely your last page is linked to these blank pages at the end of the document. Go to your last page with copy on it. Select the unlinking tool and click on that page. You will be able to tell right away if there is a link by the arrows. This means there is still copy that is unseen. It could be lots of text, or it could simply be a couple of hard returns.

Put your contents cursor after the very last thing on the page. Hit Command-shift down arrow. This will select all unseen text below that point. Then hit delete. Now use the unlink tool again on that last page. If the arrow is gone, you can now delete the extra blank pages and your document should be fine.

If you want to see what was in the copy, when you select all text to the end, select copy and put in a new document and paste. Do a command I (eye) to show format characters such as returns, etc. and you should see what is there.

Another possibility is an earlier text box is linked to the very end. In any case, you can tell if linking is the problem by using the unlink tool on the last page with copy on it.

Hope this helps.

CORRECTION!

The keyboard command to select text from an insertion point to the end is command-option-shift, down arrow. I neglected to add the option to the previous post.

FYI the up arrow does the same, selecting all text above an insertion point. Make sure you have not selected that or you will delete all your copy!

Hi Pobajo,

Thanks for your reply. The blank pages are actually appearing in various places throughout the middle of the document. They do not show up on the Page Layout, but appear when printing.

I have a facing page document and all of the facing pages are blank. I've been printing with the "do not print blank pages" setting.

I am doing this because I wanted to have content on the facing pages in the document, but found that when I added new pages, everything reshuffled and the master pages for left and right would change sides, ruining the layout applied to the master. Does this make sense? So when a master page changes sides, it loses its layout properties. Anyway, this is a different problem.

Do you have any more ideas about the blank pages that are printing, but not showing up in the page layout?

Thanks so much!

Ok, first, regarding the facing pages, yes, this is a problem when adding/deleting pages. If the margins are the same for left and right it is not a big problem, but when the margins are different, such as having a larger inside margin, you get this mess!

I could offer suggestions if I could see the document, but not knowing the complexity of it, I cannot.

Maybe you are better off doing a single page document for this. You can still make separate right and left master pages. Of course if you add or delete pages, you might need to reverse some items. Again it is hard to tell what you are dealing with.

Regarding the blank pages being printed. Two thoughts. One, is your entire document linked? I would look through the entire document. Easily done in say 50% view and watch the links and see where they go. Are the blank pages linked as well? It seems not all blanks are printing, as you say most show up in the middle.

If it is sporatic, could it be your printer is picking up multiple pages due to the paper? Too dry?

I'm sorry I cannot help more. I would need to see the document.

Pobajo,

I could send you the document if you have time to take a look. I am also attempting to create a TOC with very little success :)

The blank pages are not due to the printer as they also show up when I create a pdf. I don't think that the entire document is linked. Let me know if and how I can send you the document. I am a novice user who volunteered to do this portfolio for work and then got in over my head. Ugh!

you are fantastic!

I don't know if email addresses are allowed in the forum so that you could send me the file.Would anyone out there know? Please advise whoever can help.

thanks.
