My wife uses an HP psc1315 Printer/Scanner and Windows 98 to scan all of her receipts and invoices. She has the HP program save them as a Word Document. I try to back them up for her and I find the files are very large. An example, a doctor's invoice will sometimes be 1.5 meg. Is there a way to scan and save the scanned file in a small sized file using the HP and Windows 98? Thanks, everyone. Larry

Does the program only have a save as a "word document" option, or are there other formats available.
I suspect that although it is saving it as a word document, it is actually an image (like inserting a picture into a word file). If it can save as a jpg/jpeg format then it should compress the image down to 20% or so of scan size.

If you have winzip or other compression utility, they should compress the word documents down by 80 or 90%

Can the documents be scanned and saved as just a text file or a .rtf file (Rich Text)? Just playing around with another make of HP Scanner, I can get output to a text file at about 1kb in size, or a .rtf at about 50kb in size. The output may be slightly garbled due to limitations in OCR.

If absolute accuracy is critical then the file may have to saved as a .jpg image and edited down in size to about 800 x 600 pixels with your photo editor if the scanner cannot achieve it on its own. This should result in a file size of 50 - 200kb

Thanks everyone. I think ASG0856 has got the answer. I do believe that the file is an image (*.jpeg) saved in a word document. I'm going to do the compression as suggested. Hope all goes smooth and if not, you may hear from me again. Thanks again. Larry
