Storing and Retrieving non-text files using BLOB type

I created a table with a BLOB type field for storing non-text file (such as Word or PDF). I don't know how to command MySQL to store such data. I also don't know how to retrieve them when they are stored in the table.

If anyone knows how to do this, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
