The NBU Admin guide says that Drives with same density under the same robot should be defined in the same Storage Unit (Admin Guide Vol. 1 Page ). I am wondering if it is possible then for someone with a library having two drives to use one of the drives in an NDMP storage unit for NDMP backup using the NDMP option and the other drive in a Media Manager Storage Unit for normal media manager backups.
I have no way of testing this myself, but have used this setting with one drive in the library for NDMP in one storage unit and the other drives defined as Shared Drive in a SAN. I am wondering if it would be possible without the SSO.

Any version prior to NBU 6.0 requires that the drive(s) for NDMP be dedicated. I have not seen the the SSO option for NDMP that is supposed to be available in 6.0. In your situation, yes, your NDMP host could attach to one tape device and the other could be used by your master/media server. In your Storage Unit definition you must define who the robot control host is. You would only need the SSO option if you had numerous media servers that were going to share the non-NDMP device.

Also noteworthy is to remember that ALL media used by NDMP backups cannot be used by other backups. Any time a backup runs and uses a scratch tape it goes into an NDMP pool.

Something else to remember is that NDMP backups want a Storage Unit with an 'unlimited' fragment size.

Most of your usual storage units will have a specific fragmant size (i.e. 2GB) for instance.

So normally you would want separate storage unit(s) for NDMP backups / duplication with an unlimited fragment size.
