Is there a way to program an extension to not accept Intercom calls and have those calls ring the phone instead of opening up the speaker and mic?

It sounds like your using voice call instead of intercom. voice call opens a talk path with out ringing the set, you want to use intercom or autodials by the sounds of it. there is also a deny voice call feature to not allow this type of call.

I'M Using the [Dial Intercom] action and it does open the talk path after three beeps. The problem is that some managers don't want the phone to open up the speaker automatically so that conversations in their offices might be overheard without there knowing.

That a voice call my friend, not an intercom. I'll ask my programer to give me the steps to change it for you and i'll post them in a bit

What style phones? If you Intercom someone their speaker and mute should activate so they cannot start listening to your conversation unless you un-mute the phone to talk back.

Dial intercom is the Avaya equivalent of a Voice call. you want to use intercom which on my phone shows as an appearance. My programmer is tied up today but take a look through your programming... you do not want Dial intercom

If you're running Release 9.0, you can use the not-very secret (as in the product but not the manual) 'Deny Auto Intercom Calls' option (User | Telephony | Supervisor Settings, button action and short code features).

He wants to use a normal intercom... that's it. He's got the wrong feature programmed, he should not start messing around with the "deny" features as it is irrelevant in terms of meeting his objective. Could you outline the feature for intercom for him please... I know its "appearance" but I don't know the rest of the steps

I design systems, but I don't service them (IP Office anyway) so I don't know the exact steps. I do know that intercom is "appearance" and I beleive you'll find it in button programming. Sorry my programmer is out of the office today so I can't give you an exact answer.

If the Managers don't want the speaker to activate when calling those users, why are thy using the feature? Why don't they just call their extn normally?

Have they been incorrectly trained or is the system programmed wacky? :)

ipolmans, you are wayyyy off. Every phone has appearance buttons (usually 2-3). And yes, if you go off-hook on an appearance button and dial an extension it will ring the phone versus page the phone, but I think VoiPP is looking to be able to use Intercom to page extensions with the exception of the Manager's office. So yes, sizbut's suggestion would work.

Telecomboy... read the thread before you say im way off... he is using the Dial intercom which is a voice call... and as he states is not what he wants... he wants it to ring the extension i.e. an intercom... end of story your system has been missed programmed or you have been miss-trained as amriddle has stated.

Didn't mean to come off harsh ipolmans. Every system phone should have "appearance" buttons on them (2-3) so I am assuming that is the case here. So yes, if they don't want any Intercom Pages going on then just remove the Intercom and use one of the appearance buttons.

But:

"The problem is that some managers don't want the phone to open up the speaker automatically so that conversations in their offices might be overheard without there knowing."

That seems to mean that they do want to Intercom, they just want to block Intercom's to the Managers office.

We use a "Dial Paging" short code. This will send the call to the speaker but not open the mic until the user hits the "Answer" button on the phone.

@ipolmans. Actually you should read VoIPP's first post again. It is very clear and precise as to what is wanted "... a way to program an extension to not accept Intercom calls and have those calls ring the phone instead of opening up the speaker and mic?".

And VoIPP's second post again confirmed that the request was to change how some people's phones responded to intercom calls, not to change things for everyones phones or a problem with the use of intercom calls in the first place.

...meanwhile

@VoIPP. If you don't have IP Office Release 9.0 then the options are a bit limited (assuming that giving the managers phones that don't support handsfree is not an option).

If they have newer Avaya phones (1400, 1600, 9500 or 9600), the following workaround on the phone works so long as they don't use headset. Through the phone menu set the Default Handsfree Audio Path to be Headset. The intercom call will still auto-connect and give three beeps, but without any audio in either direction until the manager either presses the Speaker button or lifts the handset.

The drawback is that to make handsfree calls the manager has to specifically press Speaker first rather than just starting to dial.

Sizbit,

Thanks, it sounds like the option in 9.x is exactly what I need. Not sure I am ready to upgrade to 9 just yet and may wait a bit for all the bugs to be worked out.

gregl45, thanks for your suggestion although I had already thought of that. It does solve the issue of managers not opening up the speaker/mic on Intercom calls but also restricts everyone else that would like to be able to do a normal intercom call.
