I uploaded the ASP file mlawson suggested to figure out my DB path, and it actually shows UD as a program in the browser and the ASP says ASP. Am I doing something unbelievably dumb or missing something? I thought you could pull up that file in your browser...or am I supposed to be doing it a different way? My web files are on one server, my database on another, and the people owning them are both not very...um cooperative or...the brightest crayons in the box. I had to fight not to use frontpage. Sad really. Ok...well guys...I need you!
as always thanks,
Va

well, kind of...I browse to find the file, but same thing I guess. I dunno what the heck is going on. I found the path to the SQL server now, but I don't understand why, if I am making the DSN connection, I am doing this exactly. I mean, I am making the connection, as I can see my tables... it's just getting over that part that I am unable to do. Forgive my lack of connection (bad pun intended) all the info together. I feel like I am missing some puzzle piece.

I think what is happening is your pulling it like it's on your harddrive

Not like it's a webpage.

DNS (not DSN this time) needs to be set up, set up as a webpage, all that nifty stuff.

Ironyx,

Do you run any other web pages from that server at all? If you do, what URL do you type in to get them? Do you know the IP address of the SQL server? So many questions!!

Can you try running a static web page from it (just even 'Hello World' as test.htm and see if that works.

well guys, I know the web server works, I have an intranet web site on it, the database is connected to my computer, because I can see the tables on the database server. I apparently wasn't connected from the web server to the database server. The web server admin set it up. My only question is how do I use the connection he set up? Is it just mirrored in some way, or is this something that I have to directly reference.
All of your patience and guidance has been greatly appreciated. I know it is hard to figure out what kind of mess I am creating with such few details.
The light bulb is coming on, but I am afraid it's like a 10 watt. Oh well.
thanks!

Hey bud,

if he set it up he "should" and "Probably" set up an ODBC connection. actually he probably created a virtual directory to where the database is stored and created a ODBC showing it.

At this point all you "Should" have to do is create the connection in UD4, if you open whichever page you want the database on - click modify/connections - and click ok, i'm drawing off of memory here - but you'll want to create a new connection - and you have to type the database connection name that your guys there gave it. Most likely it is your database's name. Click back on out of there and you "Should" see the database.

We're going around in circles a bit here guys. Ironyx, can you contact your admin guy and get him to
1) give you the IP address of the database server (if you don't have it)
2) (ala schase, have you admin guy tell you if he did create an ODBC connection, it he did, did he create a DSN for? What name did he call it by?

If he can provide the above info, post it, stand back and see if we can get your lightbulb into double figures.

This may seem a little tough, but, hey that's the Scottish for you!!

all done. Have it figured out and displaying. I found the connection dsn in the remote server that the guy set up. All good to go. thanks for all. I feel kind of silly now that it is all done and quite simple. Oh well, live and learning.
A million thanks!
Va.

hey ya didnt need that hair right?

Is that the resounding pop of a champagne cork?

(wishful thinking)

Now you now where to go to solve your questions, Ironyx?

(Yep, anywhere else!)
