Sticky Keys Issue?

I have a Dell Latitude D630 that's running Windows XP Pro, SP2. I managed to activate the Sticky Keys feature and thought I found out how to de-activate it (via the Control Panel, Assessibility Options - removed all of the checkmarks for Use StickyKeys (including the ones under settings) and use FilterKeys (including the ones under settings, selected Apply and then that appeared to fix it).
Each time I do this and reboot, it seems to be back again (example: after making the changes and rebooting/ attempting to login, selecting CTRL+ALT+DEL repeatedly brings back the login screen which requires me to reboot. Once I've rebooted I'm able to login but every 5 or so minutes while I'm typing I'll get double/triple characters).

Has anyone seen this before (or anything like it?).

BTW, it doesn't matter if I'm typing with the external keyboard attached to the laptop or directly from the laptop.

Have you tried a system restore to get things back to where they were before you had this problem?

Under the General tab of the Accessibility Options are there any check boxes ticked under the Administrative Options?

The Ctrl-Alt-Del login screen has nothing to do with sticky keys.

Its an Operating system feature available even when you have the Login set to Use Welcome screen. Typing Ctrl-Alt-Del twice will bring it up in case an Admin needs to log in and the Admin account is not visible in the Welcome screen.

Sticky keys applies only to the Shift, Ctrl, Alt and Windows keys individually and can be disabled.

As for your double or triple characters, maybe you need to set your keyboard preferences Repeat Delay to be longer than it is.

I'm wondering why captial letters are appearing (in addition to the multiple letters), even after I've verfied that the CAPS LOCK button isn't enabled.

Sounds not like a CAPS LOCK, but rather a plain SHIFT key that is sticking. This would definitely cause your problem. I had that happen to a user that had a bunch of stuff on their desk. The SHIFT key was being depressed by a stack of papers (doesn't take much). Got the call and moved the stack.
You'd a thunk I walked on water or sumthin...

Well, I use both and external keyboard and the laptop's keyboard and it happens with both.

You could try the On Screen Keyboard if you want a third opinion. Press Windows Key + U to find it.

Can you further test with another user from Normal Mode before you check it out from Safe Mode?

Is your scroll lock key on? It shouldn't make a difference, but I did have a user once who had pressed the key and lower case letters appeared as caps, caps (shift+letter) appeared as lower case, and other general weirdness occurred.

Probably not the issue in your case but its worth checking.

Try tapping your shift key 5 times to see if it turns off again....

Most people spend their time on the "urgent" rather than on the "important."

If your laptop's keyboard is defective, it holds some
keys pressed (Shift?), you cannot see difference if
attach external keyb. Launch diagnostic at bios level,
or boot by DOS floppy and run keyboard test.

Last chance: if you can, warning, look for the way to detach keyboard.
