Ive never needed to set the metric, as its done for you based on link speed (as per the above link)
route add xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx mask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx <- router IP
Add -p at the end to make it persistent.
