Startup message- "No Valid Keymaps"

At the end of each and every reboot or startup of any kind, I get the message box(two of them overlapping, actually) "No Valid Keymaps Found." I click on the ok box and continue working. I don't know what this refers to, and therefore don't know how to get rid of it. When I go to msconfig/startup... well I'm not sure which box to uncheck. If it is that simple?

Does anybody recognize this?

Try a different keyboard. Also, make sure you "code page" hasn't been changed.

Use "Help". It will explain it better than I can.

As I understand it, it sets up your keyboard for use in a particular country, as different regions have symbols in different places on the board, or not there at all.

I am also under the impression that this is only of any use under MS-DOS, so unless you use the keyboard a lot in DOS, the relevant lines in AUTOEXEC.BAT can be removed, which might solve your problem. Do this by going to Run, type MSCONFIG, click on the autoexec.bat tab and untick these lines found there:

mode con codepage prepare=((850) C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\ega.cpi)
mode con codepage select=850
keyb uk,,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\keyboard.sys

While you are there, clear these lines appearing under Config.sys:

device=C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\display.sys con=(ega,,1)
Country=044,850,C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\country.sys

All can be re-instated by reversing the above proceedure, but none of these are required under the Windows environment.

To "untick" lines in autoexec.bat or config.sys, just type REM (and a space) before any line you don't want. That way, if you need to change back, just remove thr "REM (space)".

I finally found a way to correct this.
Run...msconfig...startup- the one I successfully unchecked was the keyboard manager. I'm not sure what that one really is supposed to do. My keyboard still works just fine. There are a couple of buttons I never really used (the media buttons), so if they are now disabled I'm neither sure nor concerned.

But it worked. No more Keymaps message to click off at every start up.

Out of curiousity, what kind of keyboard is this? Is there a brand name (and model number) on the bottom?

I'm not in front of it right now, but I'm almost positive it was the original keyboard supplied by HP- an HP pavillion. I'll check tomorrow (monday) and get back to you.

Lame of me to take so long to get back to you. The keyboard is definitely the original HP multimedia keyboard with tons o' buttons for the cd/dvd player, internet buttons, volume and shortcut buttons.

My guess on model number on the label underneath says 5302h (although it does not have the words "model #". There is a p/n- 5184-4708.
