Hello all,
This lady at my work says that whenever she starts up her windows 98 computer at home the startup menu always comes up and she has to choose normal. It does not run scandisk just goes to the menu. She says that her computer shuts down fine. Any of you have an idea. Let me know what other kind of information you may need and I will find out. Thank you,

Yeah, she has MSDOS.Sys with a line that says BootMenu=1.
Solution is to edit the line out.
first , in windows, start , run, msdos, cd attrib -s -h -r msdos.sys
edit msdos.sys
edit the line out
exit edit
attrib +s +h +r msdos.sys
exit
shutdown and reboot

should clear it.

I did some shorthand in the line to get there. The steps to get to the file are separate clicks or command line enters. Hope she has some dos experience. Sounds like the line in her MSDOS.SYS probably is BootKeys=2. I thought the possible settings were: 0 for no menu, 1 for 'normal' (menu accessible with F8), and 2 for always. I would probably have her set it to normal in case the menu would ever have to be used (IMHO). [sig][/sig]

You're right. I crossed my OSs and started thinking 95. And was trying to keep in mind the .sys, .w40, and .dos files and how they show up in various boot configurations. And I can't even remember how 98 does it in the various configs available. Hey guys,
That lady went home and edited her msdos.sys file and found no bootkey line but she did see the bootmenu=1 line, so she said she got rid of that line and that fixed her problem. She says shes sure she has Win 98. Thanks from us both.

How about having her look to see what she is running. This stuff changes from version to version and I don't remember where the change was made and I need refreshment.
Answer is at start>settings>control panel>system giving a splash screen with version number in upper right quadrant.
