I have this problem for long time, not sure how to fix it. Right now I am using Windows 2000 as my desktop OS. The login window does not show up when I startup my computer. That means no username and password are required. Anybody can use my computer without putting username and password. This is a serious security problem. Please help me to figure it out.

Thanks

Go to START -> SETTINGS -> CONTROL PANEL -> USERS AND PASSWORDS -> ADVANCED TAB and click the box "Require users to press Ctrl-Alt-Del before logging on.

Make sure you have some accounts created first and make sure you know the admin password for this PC.

Cheers!

I just checked. It already checked. Do you think installation of other program will disable this feature?

Thanks

Uncheck it, reboot, and check it again after rebooting. Don't ask me why, that's what it takes to get the login prompt back.

Dear Newposter:
I tried your method. Unfortunately it still can not fix my problem. I thought there is a setting for autologin. I need to disable it. Not sure how.

Thanks

I fixed this problem by changing the setting in registry.
run regedit;
go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
go to Software
go to Microsoft
go to Windows
go to Windows NT
go to WinLogon
Change AutoAdminLogon from 1 to 0.

It works.

Thanks anyway

There is a way where you don't have to edit the registry...

Go to the Users and Passwords under the Control Panel, and under the "Users" tab there is a checkbox for "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer."

It's located above the user list for the computer. If it is not there, then you are logging on to a domain.
