Is it possible to startup an instance without transacion recovery?

Haste,

Just curious...why would you not want transaction recovery?

I am not aware of a way to turn off transaction recovery since it is Oracle's architectural center-piece.

Handling a database recovery where the sys temp file was dropped before taking the tablespace offline. Also users were sharing the same tablespace. Thats my predicament.

Haste,

I believe we can help you, but we need a full disclosure of what your situation is and what you are trying to accomplish.

First, can you please confirm the status of your database? Is it up and running? If not, what are the diagnostics that Oracle gives you when you attempt to startup?

The issue at the site has been closed - we reinstalled from a dump.
However for learning ends, there was an error in the SMON alert log. It kills the instance after attempin transaction recovery. The system runs on oracle 8i.
It started when the IT admin noticed that transaction weren't completing for lack of space. He thought that the Temp01.dbf which was 15GB in size was the cause so he tried dropping. So he dropped the file before dropping the tablespace. A file that size obviously didn't contain anything temporary.
