after windows boots, where the welcome logon screen should be, the screen displayes black. everything runs fine but nothing will show up on the screen. I installed a program that was supposed to change some setting that did this, but the change has been undone, and even windows restored to a far previous date. What would be the simplest possible fix for this situation?

hiya - I would be inclined to go into safe mode and get rid of that software you put on. One thing I dont understand is this part , "the screen displayes black, everything runs fine but nothing will show up on the screen"
. If the screen is black how can you be sure things are running fine, can you hear logon alerts etc?

This tells me your OS is ok but possibley your graphics is is in trouble. What ever you installed might have done something to your video drivers.

I'm not totally sure to be honest and I need more info.

1) What was installed?
2) What did you install to correct the issue.
3) Brief summary of your set up.

Bearing in mind I had this same issue from a dvdwriter firmware upgrade which had compatability issues with nforce 2 chipset drivers!

Cheers

when windows is booting try to hold f8 and go into advanced startup options and choose last known good configuration that should get you into windows to check the event viewer for clues to the cause. If not try the recovery console from the cd rom and run "chkdsk /r" also you could try "fixboot" and "fixmbr" at the recovery console command line. Hope this helps the fixboot has recovered the black screen error several times for me, as well as various other boot problems. Hope this helps.

X-setup pro 6.6 final is the name of the utility.
I installed nothing to correct the issue I used the "restore to an earlier date" feature of windows, and restored back to the origional condition, this did nothing.
configuration will follow tomarow

here's what I had time to look at
some compaq with an AMD K6 at 500Mhz unknown built in AGP video,
Aha! I just remembered another setting I changed, somthing about speeding up Agp cards with AMD's!
