Hello all!
Need some help! I have a Gateway 2000 GP5-200. Everything was deleted proir to me receving it. I have a Windows 98 software cd I would like to install. Do I need any other software, dos etc. If so where can I get it. Do I need to setup any thing and how do I go about installing all of it. Any help appreciated!

Drusse

Probably can install from the CD without anything else.
Get to the CMOS [F2] during boot up and change boot order to have the CD at the top. Then save the settings and let it boot with the CD.
If you can't set the boot order, then you need a 98 bootdisk with CDROM suppport. From a friend or The bootdisk will support 95%+ of all systems. Once booted , go to the CD and run setup. Ed Fair

Ed, thanks for the reply. I was able to go into CMOS, was F1 on my computer. I changed the boot order to the following: 1st CD-R2nd Hard Drive, 3rd Removable device(assuming thats my floppy, since it was first and the floppy always tried 1st prior to the change). After saving the changes and rebooting the gate way 2000 logo came up with ram test, mouse & keyboard all ok. Then the hard drive blinked and the screen also displayed Fixed disk 0 Seagate Quantum fireball SE & Atapi cdrom fx320s. Then F1 for setup was displayed. With the Windows 98 CD in the drive I waited and the screen went blank & then Boot FROM: 1 Hard Disk (Highlighted) and 2 CD Rom. It gives you 10 seconds to mke a selection. I tried to cursor down by the arrow keys, page down. Couldn't ever get it to move to the CD rom. The 10 sec. time out and the screen changes to all blank except theres a blinking cursor in the top left corner. Then nothing works, have to power down. Any idea, what to do?

Thanks Drusse

Not familiar with the model. Would probably try the #2 key. Other than that, try downloading on another machine a 98 bootdisk and try with it. Ed Fair

1) If you are running W98 on your "internet machine" can you not create a bootable floppy here via Start| Settings| Control_Panel| Add/Remove_Programs| Startup_Disk| Create_Disk...| ??
2) Although this floppy is labled a Windows Startup Disk it contains everything necessary to implement a replacement hard drive from scratch, which yours may well be if "everything was deleted".
3) I would suggest resetting the CMOS boot sequence back to floppy-first. My first step is to get to the a: prompt. (This is the first I have heard that a W98 distribution CD might be bootable, there being no such mention in my original documention.)
