some of them as they do not need to run at start up- MY husband is impatient and does not like to wait while some items load. How can I disable them [ e.g. Ad-aware] so I can just run them when I choose.
Also is there a way to check for viruses, trojans etc from an online site as although I run Spybot, Ad-aware[ paid for version] and Norton antiVirus there still seem to be problems since our internet connection went down in the middle of December [ now fixed, whilst doing this I went wireless, using Airport Express and a Belkin Network Card in the PC!
thanks any advice gratefully received.
Happy New Year when it arrives!

To prevent programs from loading during startup, try: Start/Run/Msconfig (choose the Startup tab). Pls note that most of what you'll see there are system files that need to run when XP loads so be careful with what you're removing checkmarks from. Also, you can right-click on the start button and select 'Properties'. On the Start Menu tab, click Classic Start Menu and then 'Customize'. Select 'Remove', open the 'Programs' folder and then open the 'Startup' Folder. Highlight the items in the 'Startup' folder that you want to remove and click the 'Remove' button. Click the 'Close' button and then 'Okay' twice. Also, these registry locations are another source:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

Go to run, type msconfig, and select the startup tab. Uncheck what you don't want
