Start up error in Excel 3

Hello

I am using MS Excel 2003

This is by no means the end of the world but it is annoying.
Everytime I start Excel it comes up with an error:

'Training Notes.doc: File format is invalid'

I suspect this is not a standard Excel error and that it is looking locally for Training Notes.doc
I have looked through macros and start up options and I can't anywhere where this resides or what is telling it to look for this file

Does anybody have any thoughts?

Have a look in your XLSTART folder. C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\XLSTART

Excel will try to open any files in this folder whenever it starts up. I would suggest that somehow, Training Notes.doc has been saved here

Remove and issue should clear up

Also the location stated Under tools options, general.

It would be either
"At startup, open all files in"
or
"Alternate Startup File location"
depending on your version

I've looked in XLSTART and there are no files present.
There are no hidden files

I've looked at tools - options - general and "At startup, open all files in" is blank

I have also searched my entire C drive for any references to this file and there's nothing there

Any further thoughts?

First with Excel closed, find a file with extension XLB and delete it.

Also look in
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Excel\Options

and see what files it is trying to open

Unfortunately, still no success
There were 4 XLB files and I deleted all these

I've looked in the registery and it makes no reference to 'Training Notes'

I really cannot see where else to look ?

What version of Windows are you on?

In 2000, at least, there are multiple XLSTART folders.

One is at
C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART
for each of the users

another at
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

Delete your Personal.xls file. Hope you don't have anything important in there.

Thanks, solved it

As suggested there was an instance of Training Notes.doc under C:\Documents and Settings\USER NAME\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART

I really don't know why a global search did not find this
I searched the entire C drive multiple times using variant on Training Notes just in case

Anyway, it works now so thanks
