Start Menu Delay 1

Hi guys,
My Start Menu has a long delay [5 seconds+] the first time that I access it after rebooting. This happens only the first time I access it and is really annoying!. I know about the registry key that allows you to adjust the delay corresponding to the display of each sub menus in the start menu but that's NOT what I'm talking about.

I'm also not talking about the issue with having a shortcut to a document or resource located on a newtrok computer.

I have two differnt XP PRO systems and they both do this.Just wondering if anybody has any suggestions?

A guess:

Many parts of your Start menu are stored in encrypted fashion in the registry, and are decrypted and cached with the first access; which leads to the second source of slowness, often this attracts the attention of many antivirus programs so the results need to be scanned prior to them being displayed.

No, unfortunately, that's not related to my "annoyance". Actually I found this reponse on another forum that seems to make sense and seems to be consistent with bcastner's response. I have all animation effects disabled and have tons of disk performance tweaks.

"This is really not a problem. I know it is annoying but it does happen. What is happening is that your start menu is on your hard drive, it has to be retreived for the first time after boot up. Because it has to be retrieved from your hard drive it is slow. After the first time you look in the start menu I believe it is then put into memory until you reboot so it makes it quicker the next time. I don't know a computer that the start menu is not slow the first time you try to open it when you boot up. The more programs you have the worse it gets.

I normally use short cuts on my desktop rather then use the start menu. I have tons of short cuts to everything I use regularly. This way I by pass the start menu most of the time.
