server is working fine as far as i can tell, the only problem is that the start button stays pressed down but none of the menu does not pull up. It has really been bothering me any help will be appreciated

Did you try right-clicking on the task bar --> select properties to see if menu options have been un-checked (ex Administrative Tools, Favorites, etc). Are there any policies applied to this machine?

yeah i tried right clicking on the start button but that doesn't seem to work, everything checked out ok. As far as the policies are concerned i havent changed anything and it is something that recently started to happen. but i guess that is the only stone unturned.

If you state that the start button is pressed down, it sounds like the auto hiding option is checked. Did you tried to right clik on the task bar not the start button and choose properties and see whether the auto hide is checked. Even if that option is checked, you should be able to see the programs if you click on the start button. Try to reboot and see what happens
