Start Button doesn't display "Start"

Here is my situation. I have a Win XP pro machine. The "Start" doesn't display in the start button also the "X" in the close window box doesn't appear either. Has anyone experinced this before?

Yea, I checked that. It's default

Does this problem occur if you log on with another user account?

If it doesn't say "Start", then what does it display?

How is it from Safe Mode? System Restore might be of use? Also a check for malware.
