I was at a friends house and the start button menu (and all sub menus like programs and search) was all a very dark grey (almost black) so you could barely see the words (icons are there). I could see the words barely but they said they couldn't. The machine is running windows 98se. They admit to "clicking around" before they had this problem.

My question is how are the settings for the start button changed? I have looked in the start button properties and they computers display properties but cannot find out how they made the change.

Any help would be great.
Thanks.

Don't have Win98 at hand here, but if I remember correctly,
Right click on an empty area of the desktop, click on properties, and then on the Appearance tab.

Select 3D objects from the "Item" pulldown menu and you should be able to change the colors of the menus and buttons there.

Thank you vacunita for the quick and correct answer. I thought I checked everything. I had it in front of me and couldn't get it and you drew from memory. Thanks for the help.
