HI I set my machine to go on standby but after about a minute sometimes less it switches back on again. I have a screen saver set to 1 minute, but will one over ride the other and which way as neither seem to work.if I just leave the machine it stays on the desktop screen all day can anyone think what is going on and how to fix it. This is a long running problem
I am not sure what other info you want for this Learn something new every day.

In some computers you can turn off the power saver, that's the Sleep Mode feature, in the Bios' Power area - Go in Bios/CMOS Setup by tapping F10 or F1/F2 during Startup; Arrow over to Power; Arrow down to Power Savings; Strike the Enter key; Arrow to disable; Strike the Enter key; Never use Sleep Mode/Standby!

Arrow back up to Power; Arrow over to Exit; Strike the
Enter key and choose exit saving your changes; Strike the Enter key. The heading names may be a little different but the procedure is basically the same under the Power main heading in the Bios.
Also, back in Windows desktop, Right-click an open space on your desktop; Choose Properties; Click the screen saver tab; Click the Settings button; Under the power scheme heading use the drop-down arrow to choose Home/Office Desk; below that, if there is a Sleep Mode area, use the drop down area to choose Never; Under the Settings for Home Office Desk power scheme - Beside Turn off Monitor it should say 'after 15 minutes'; Beside Turn Off Hard Disks it should say 'after 30 minutes'.

HI Its me back again.
I have had a hard drive failure and reverted to Win98 but I dont like it as much
I still cannot get my screen saver to operate.
Only if I go into desktop and manually set it on preview
I have all the other setting sa above. so why is it still not working as it should.

It might reset that way because the settings outlined above have changed. Also, be sure and check the BIOS button battery for a full charge and that it's seated correctly. Just take it to Walmart or similar store and replace it.

Ground yourself correctly by properly shutting down and unplugging the power from the computer, remnoving the case and touching the power supply, holding your feet still, before touching any internal components. Emachines, Celeron 600, 256 Mb RAM, 10 Gb HDD, ADSL.

An over sensitive mouse could pick up vibration as input signal and bring the PC out of Standby.
A programme that requires refreshing its data will case that as well but it would happen on a regular time intervals.

Ok Thanks. I am also going to ask the shop who put in my hard drive to check they changed the battery. tho it wasnt on the job spec.
I doubt it is a refresh problem as it doesn't go into screen saver at all and it is set at 3 minutes just to see if it would.
Ho HUM
I will have to go and check all the settings again. And close down most of the programs that run in the background see if it will come on. then add each prog i at a time until I find what it is.
But this is so time consuming. especially now i run 2 different setups.
One day I might get round to neworking them saves me moving my printer about.
